Mercury Control - COHPACTM & TOXECONTM

Hamon Research-Cottrell is the only experienced licensed supplier of EPRI's COHPACTM & TOXECONTM particulate and mercury reduction technologies. To date, HRC has installed over 1,700 MW of COHPACTM technology, on both coal-fired and waste-to-energy combustors. Full-scale demonstration of TOXECONTM is currently underway at our Alabama Power, E.C. Gaston COHPACTM installation as well as operating on our American Ref-Fuel, SEMASS waste-to-energy COHPACTM installations.

- COHPACTM

COHPACTM is an EPRI licensed technology which is centered around the combination of an existing or new electrostatic precipitator with a Hamon Research-Cottrell high air to cloth ratio baghouse.

The baghouse is placed in a separate casing downstream of the ESP (known as COHPAC I) or within the existing ESP's casing by replacing one or more fields of collecting plates with baghouse modules (COHPAC II).

COHPAC I technology permits high mercury reduction levels. COHPAC II technology also permits control of high mercury emissions.
COHPAC I COHPAC II

The technology is based on the fact that a baghouse collects higher levels of particulate-and finer particulate-than an ESP of equivalent size. The baghouse acts as a "polishing device". By using dry additives such as activated carbon, sodium, or calcium compounds, COHPACTM in combination with TOXECONTM offers you the ability to significantly reduce mercury, sulfur dioxide, and other toxic emissions than an ESP alone could not economically collect. HRC is the only EPRI licensed supplier with full-scale, commercial operating experience on both coal-fired and waste-to-energy fired boilers.     Two 600 MW COHPAC equipped coal-fired boilers

Features of this technology included:

  • High collection efficiencies (as high as 99.9%)
  • Low capital cost (much lower than competing systems to achieve comparable particulate control levels.)
  • Compact footprint (Higher filtration rates than traditional fabric filter systems).
  • Works with a wide range of fuels (for flexibility in choosing the most available and economical coals.)
  • Can separate toxic emissions for cost-effective disposal options through the use of appropriate additives (TOXECONTM).

- TOXECONTM

TOXECONTM is an EPRI licensed technology involving the introduction of a sorbent between a primary particulate collector and a fabric filter system in an arrangement such as COHPAC provides. TOXECONTM can be provided either in a COHPACTM mode or utilizing conventional fabric filter systems, but in series with a primary particulate collector such as either an Electrostatic Precipitator or mechanical collector. If used with activated carbon, TOXECONTM has been demonstrated to be effective in controlling mercury and dioxins found in the flue gas.

HRC is currently demonstrating on a full-scale basis the application of this technology for mercury controls at Alabama Power's E.C. Gaston Steam Plant. This Long-Term demonstration, DOE funded project is the second phase in a program begun in 2001. HRC is a co-contributor in this program designed to demonstrate the ability to control mercury emissions utilizing both our COHPAC and TOXECON technologies. Testing is anticipated to continue into 2004 while investigating various types of dry sorbets and fabric construction.
